The Prehistoric Arthropod
The image used in our logo is a horseshoe crab. This prehistoric arthropod is estimated to be 300 million years old. They live and breed in the salt-water shallows from the mid-Atlantic, as far north as Franklin, Maine. Our Hog Bay is the northernmost breeding ground for this unique creature.
Every year between the full moons in May and June a small group of volunteers gather on our shores to count, record, tag and observe the crab population. It is this time of year that the creatures breed and come into shallow waters to lay their eggs.
